“Nun Girl Summer”

The term “Nun Girl Summer” has become popularized in pop culture this year, illustrating the desire for young people to take a break from increasingly chaotic lives and superficial relationships to embrace the present, structured and joyful lives of Catholic sisters.

For us, “Nun Girl Summer” is not a season — it’s our way of life. No matter how busy we become, we remain committed to living out our Benedictine lives as fully as possible for the glory of God. At Saint Benedict’s Monastery and Saint Scholastica Convent, “Nun Girl Summer” looks like this:

• We remain rooted in tradition and in our primary ministry of prayer. Praying Liturgy of the Hours three times a day in community helps us stay present and grounded in God’s unfailing love.
• We welcome all guests as Christ and live out a spirit of hospitality. This summer, we welcomed guests to Mass and prayer, the Art and Heritage Place, the Spirituality Center•Studium, Girls, God and Good Times (3G) Camp, and our Benedictine Live-In Experience.
• We steward the Lord’s gift of creation through growing, maintaining and harvesting gardens. We also spend time praising God for the beauty all around us.
• We honor our past while embracing our future, discerning together where God is calling us to be as a community. This summer, we demonstrated this commitment as we marked a historic milestone with the groundbreaking of our new monastery.
• We take time to enjoy leisure activities and build deeper relationships with one another.
