Daily Meditation for March 27, 2025
There are many different images we can use to describe God. When I was in college and considering religious life, I thought of God as a guitarist who was always picking on me. Other times, especially when I’ve encountered difficulties, I’ve imaged God as a rock, a solid foundation on which I stand, upon which I gather my strength. More recently I have come to envision God as a great artist, and I am a slab of marble. All the time, God is either chiseling away little by little, ever so delicately or using a hammer, pounding away more forcefully, shaping me into who I am supposed to be. Unfortunately, it’s a painful process to create the final product. In the end, however, we will all be set free as Michaelangelo stated: “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.” How do you envision God? Has your image changed over time?
