Daily Meditation for March 5, 2024

Reading commentaries on our country leave us conflicted. On one hand, as citizens of the U.S., we should be deeply grateful for our nation’s history, its legacy and its role in the world. On the other hand, as people with moral and ethical values, we should be profoundly troubled by aspects of our nation’s history, its legacy, and ongoing role in the world. Where does one go with two such diametrically opposing truths? Many religious traditions announce hope for the poor, the desperate, the imprisoned, the abused; and call for us to help our suffering fellow humans. During Lent, we  cry out to God in our helplessness: “Bear us through these troubled times! And give us compassion for our  brothers and sisters.”
