Daily Meditation for March 7, 2025

The prophet Isaiah gives a harsh rebuke and judgement on those who speak of a covenant with God by observing the laws but who act in self-centered behavior. They glory in their fasting, believing this is pleasing to God—while ignoring the needs of those around them. Isaiah points out the hypocrisy in this behavior. If one fasts but does not go beyond “lying in sackcloth and ashes,” how does this please God? The message is surely fitting in our time as well. Lent offers a concentrated period of concrete action to meet the needs of others. Isaiah lists such deeds as sharing bread with the hungry, sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked and setting free the oppressed. The hungry, the naked, the homeless and the oppressed are always present and dependent on our aid. Fasting has its value but giving a helping hand more so.
