Daily Meditation for March 4, 2025

When a wise and loving woman recently died at the age of 97, her grandchildren said she had taught them that “patience and kindness are the highest marks of intelligence.” Their grandmother was well-educated, a scientist and botanist, a lifelong learner and teacher. Yet to her, there was no higher measure of intelligence than patience and kindness. What greater legacy could we hope to leave behind when our earthly journey ends and we go home to God? As we prepare to begin another Lenten journey, consider how our prayer, fasting and almsgiving might have the effect of making us kinder and more patient—toward others and ourselves. No matter who we are, no matter our education, experience or occupation, being patient and kind is within our reach. Moreover, these Christian fundamentals are blessedly contagious. Practicing patience and kindness in our Lenten days will give us, already now, glimpses of resurrection and light. What more could we hope for as together we journey to God?
