Daily Meditation for February 3, 2025
Rudy, a golden retriever, followed his trainer into church, trotting as the master of the space and the center of people’s attention. He settled on the floor of the pew; his trainer, Julianne, directed his movements through his leash. Rudy kept looking into her eyes. No, he was not looking primarily for treats. As a service dog, he is being taught to keep his eyes focused on his trainer to detect her emotions and needs so he can act to meet them. As I watched, I slipped into considering some situations of my life. I wondered how much I focus on the eyes of people I encounter to detect their mood, their physical well-being and needs, and their relationship with me. Am I a good service-giver with sensitivity to detect and act with appropriate and respectful care? What further training do I need?
