“One Way of Life, One Love: Mother Benedicta Riepp, OSB” by Ephrem Hollermann, OSB
Mother Benedicta Riepp, OSB (1825–1862), an immigrant from our grandmother Abbey of St. Walburg in Eichstätt, Bavaria, is honored by us as the foundress of Benedictine women in North America. We will explore the life and legacy of her short life and the 200th anniversary of her birth and enduring spiritual vision. We will examine that vision “in her own words,” excerpted from some of her extant letters. Mother Benedicta’s gravesite is in the cemetery at Saint Benedict’s Monastery, St. Joseph, Minn.
Sister Ephrem Hollermann is professor emerita of historical theology at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University. Since her retirement, her primary research and writing interests have focused on American Benedictine women’s history within the context of the American Catholic Church. In addition to her many years of teaching, she served her community as novice director and as prioress. She has authored two books on American Benedictine women.
If you plan to attend in-person, please register online no later than Saturday, April 26. This will assist us in planning for Eucharist and the meal. Registration is NOT required for those joining us virtually. A Zoom link for the afternoon session will be sent Thursday, May 1.
