Responding to the needs
of the Church and the world

Our Mission

We, the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn., are a monastic community of women who seek God in our daily lives according to the Gospel and the Rule of Benedict. Through our ministry of prayer, work and community living, we listen and respond to the needs of the Church and the world.

Prayer Requests

As a Benedictine monastic community, a significant part of our mission is prayer. Is there someone or something you would like us to pray for? You’re invited to share your special intentions with us. You will be remembered during our daily prayer of Liturgy of the Hours, and your request will be shared on a community bulletin board seen by the sisters every day.

It is our privilege to pray for you. God bless you!

Message From the Prioress

Let’s pray on these words from St. John Paul II, joining them with Emma Lazarus’ words inscribed on the Statue of Liberty:

Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.

If you would like to help live the sentiments expressed by St. John Paul and Emma Lazarus in these tumultuous times, you can donate on our website, marking your gift for Social Justice Ministries.

Happening at the Monastery

Life Awareness Retreat • February 20-21, 2026

A life of joy and purpose begins with a simple question: How am I being called to serve others?

Join us for a Life Awareness Retreat from Friday, February 20, 2026, 5:30 p.m., through Saturday, February 21, 2026, 4:30 p.m., at Saint Benedict’s Monastery in St. Joseph, Minn., as we explore this question and others together in Christ’s company.

Life Awareness is a retreat program for single Catholic women and men, ages 18-30, interested in learning more about serving our Church and world as future priests, deacons, religious sisters and brothers, and lay ministers/missioners. We hope you’ll join us for a gathering that welcomes you and your questions — even your doubts — as we share stories, sharpen skills for listening and discernment, and experience the impact of our Catholic faith in service to others.

Please register by Wednesday, February 18, 2026. For more information, contact Sister Laura Suhr at lsuhr001@csbsju.edu or (320) 363-7100.

Life Awareness is hosted by the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict, the Benedictine Monks of Saint John’s Abbey, the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls, the Crosier Fathers and Brothers, and Maryknoll Missioners.

Daily Meditation for February 2, 2026

Some people think of Minnesota winters as being rather dull, dark, and certainly, long. In their eyes, the color palette of the season seems to hold only three choices: black, white or grey. At present, so many places in our world seem to reflect the same few colors. Seeing new colors might change everything. Walk out on a winter day and look for the varying shades of brown in bushes and branches, notice the deep greens of the pines, see those occasional blue patches of sky and the red flash of a cardinal, and cheer up. There’s more here than first seen! It’s the same with our view of the human community. Look around to see the variety of colors brought to life through the heroism of firefighters, the courage of parents, the many little acts of kindness happening every day. All these and many more ordinary things add rich color and vibrancy to our winter color palette!
