Daily Meditation for October 2, 2026
“The light shines in the darkness.” These well-known words are the part of the opening sentences of St. John’s Gospel. It’s fall, and as the daylight hours dwindle, it seems timely to meditate on them.
Not only are the daylight hours shorter, but we live in dark times. As disciples of Jesus, we have a responsibility to shine in the darkness. The words of St. John remind us that the light of Christ is never overcome by the darkness. Why is that? Because generation after generation, women and men who hold fast to the Gospel, keep that light shining. As the nights lengthen, take time to meditate on John’s words and reflect on what you can do to keep your own small flame alive. Broaden your gaze and see all the other ordinary people who are shining their light. Together, we are powerful. We will not allow the darkness to overcome us.
