Daily Meditation for October 12, 2026
October 12, officially a federal holiday, is observed by most of the states, although with differing degrees of celebration. But since the 1990s, the traditional Columbus Day has been replaced by or linked with Indigenous People’s Day for some states. Native American culture is given a respect and an acknowledgement of the terrible treatment of Indians long overdue. Explorers and settlers colonized indigenous peoples’ lives and homelands for centuries, but we have come to realize the injustice done to them. Any who take Jesus’ teaching to heart know that our God is one who created and loves all his creation—anywhere and anytime. The Gospels show us the Son of God reaching out to everyone, desiring all people membership in an inclusive community. This requires our giving mutual respect and a sharing of resources. We pray for this outcome, in a spirit of reconciliation.
