Daily Meditation for October 29, 2024
News from many states report that American flags have been disappearing from cemeteries. In nearby Eau Claire, Wis., dozens of flags were stolen from veterans’ graves, leaving just the poles behind. Then one day, a groundskeeper noticed a tree with a large squirrels’ nest sporting strips of red, white and blue cloth woven through its structure. What can we learn from this star-spangled nest design trending among squirrels? It might suggest that we weave the ideals represented by the flag into our thought processes, goals and actions. Imagine the effect on the common good in our neighborhoods, workplaces, cities and states if the principles of liberty, equality, basic rights and respect for law were expressed more intentionally. It seems that the power behind change in American character are based more on politics, personal gain and marketing than on our foundational values. Simply flying the flag is not enough. What opportunities do you have to weave our basic values into a sturdy and warm life structure?
