Daily Meditation for October 14, 2024
I recently read Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson and highly recommend that it be at the top of everyone’s reading list. It masterfully describes through expansive research and narrative the history of racism in America and its effects in our country today. Racism is an issue to which we cannot turn a blind eye. It is not something of the past but is still very much a part of American culture. For example, last month I drove past two confederate flags which could be seen from the highway. Wilkerson describes our role in the racism crisis as inheriting a 400-year-old house. We did not buy the house, but we do have a responsibility to acknowledge the cracks in the foundation and repair the rotten joists in the floors and attic. Published in 2020, Caste is informative, readable and eye-opening.
