Daily Meditation for October 8, 2024

“October is the fallen leaf, but it is also a wider horizon more clearly seen.” (Hal Borland). October is a month of contrasts. Its fallen leaves are a sign that that the planting, growing and harvest times are over. Yet the leaves preparing to fall are one of nature’s most beautiful gifts, sources of pleasure which temper the sense of melancholy as we see the natural world shrinking toward winter. At the same time, the horizon is expanding. As the leaves vanish, a different perspective emerges as we gain an unimpeded picture of the landscape. These contrasts are lessons for living. October teaches to us to be grateful for the daily while stepping back to contemplate a bigger perspective. Take time this autumn to consider where life is leading you, whether you are tending to your needs as a whole person and how fully you are living the Gospel message of love for all people.
