In July of 2022, a letterpress-printed scroll of the Rule of St. Benedict, created by Richard Bresnahan, pottery director at Saint John’s University (SJU), Collegeville, Minn., and Mary Bruno, local artist and owner of Bruno Press, St. Joseph, Minn., was displayed in the Gathering Place of Saint Benedict’s Monastery.  Recently, the scroll has had an opportunity to travel and be viewed by Benedictines from across the world during the Communio Internationalis Benedictinarum (CIB) symposium that was held in Cullman, AL, September 4-8, 2023.

Sister Lynn McKenzie, CIB Moderator, included this in her introduction: “Mary Bruno’s popular, old-school, analog letterpress art is a tool of her legacy — it ‘tells stories, it connects people, it builds communities, it is modern magic.’ Before I met Mary, I saw her Scroll of the Rule of St. Benedict, over a year ago when this work of art was on display at Saint Benedict’s Monastery in St. Joseph, Minn., not far from Mary’s print studio. I was mesmerized by the combination of beauty of her art and the wonderful exhibit of the Holy Rule of our Holy Father Benedict by which we, as professed Benedictines, live our lives. Then last March I had the opportunity to actually meet the amazingly talented and energetic Mary Bruno while I was in Minnesota.  I was mesmerized also by her very person – by the way she lives her life with the good zeal of which St Benedict speaks, and by her creativity and openness to new ideas.”
