Bishop Tutu told Richard Rohr in a meeting that, “We are only the light bulbs, and our job is just to remain screwed in!” This quotation from the famous Anglican bishop of South Africa is a homey way of saying we need to remain connected to God. It is God’s plan to create us with an intrinsic value. And that automatically comes with who we are, with being human. Our value does not depend on outer appearances, abilities, or achievements, however that may be judged. But we exist only through divine Love. This divine Love and energy comes to us because we are “screwed in” and actively connected to God, who invites us into the relationship where we will be at home, where acceptance and benevolence are a given. So now our job is to find every way we can to remain connected to God. It can be through frequent moments of prayer during the day, by seeing God in everyone we meet, and by care in making life choices. The more ways we can think of, the brighter lights we will be.
