“As the sentinel waits for the dawn” (Ps. 130:6). This quotation resonates with me since a conversation I had with a Vietnam veteran a number of years ago. He quoted this section of the psalm as he shared how terrified he was during his nights of guard duty while in Vietnam. There was no knowing if the Vietkong were to stage an attack even during the darkest hours of the night. Oh, how he waited for the dawn. Presently we are in the darkest time of the year. While we are not on guard duty awaiting the dawn, there’s that glimmer of hope for light. That glimmer of hope does not go unrewarded. As imperceptible as it is, there’s already a gain of light since December 21. As we await for the daily brightening of each dawn, remember Him who came to be our Light. In Him there is no darkness.
