A bright red EXIT sign is very prominent in the Oratory at Saint Benedict’s Monastery. It is difficult to ignore. It seems strange to notice it as soon as one enters. Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to say WELCOME TO THIS PEACEFUL PLACE? People enter quietly to wait for the entire community to arrive for common prayer. Maybe it is wise to have the sign in this special place. It brings a sense of security in the event that an emergency would take place. What does one take along as one leaves the red EXIT sign? Who will one encounter on the day’s journey that will be in need of some security? Seeing EXIT may be a reminder to bring to others a sense of peace, calmness, hope and love that is within oneself and can be spread to others.
