“April is a promise that May is bound to keep.” (Hal Borland) This is a time of year when promise is in the air. In the northern hemisphere, April gives us hints of life renewing itself: trees start to bud, small shoots begin pushing up through the earth, we’re conscious of birdsong, and birds who winter in warmer climes start to return. May brings these hints to fruition. There’s another promise that this time of year holds. Easter frequently falls in April, as it has in 2021, promising us that death is not the end because Jesus Christ has risen from the dead. We celebrate that promise through most of May, culminating in the great feast of Pentecost, which seals the promise of hope we have received in the Resurrection. The presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives assures us that God is always with us, our Guide and Support.
