“Where is my faith?” This is the question that Mother Teresa asked shortly after beginning her work in the slums of Calcutta. We don’t think of holy people asking such a heart-wrenching question. We assume that persons like Mother Teresa were filled with faith at all times. Are we disheartened to learn of her doubt? Or are we encouraged that while she suffered from these doubts, she was continuously faithful to her deep longing for God and to serving the poorest of the poor? We consider Jesus, who in the last day of his mission on earth, cried, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me!” But Jesus himself clung to God through everything, hoping against hope. And we are encouraged, inspired, consoled by such great faithfulness.
