Ancient tradition tells us that Mary was taken by her parents, Anna and Joachim, to the temple in Jerusalem at the age of three to be consecrated to God. She probably spent time during her childhood in study and prayer, learning the Scriptures and becoming aware of the messianic promise. But she could never know that one day she would be approached by a heavenly messenger regarding the fulfillment of that promise. Mary’s “yes” at that moment made her a Christ-bearer, and this she was for the rest of her life. Like Mary, we too have been consecrated to God as infants in baptism. We too are Christ-bearers. Let us renew our own privilege as Christ-bearers as we come and go through our daily routines to each and all we meet.
