Daily Meditation for October 27, 2020

The opposite of a true statement is a false statement. But the opposite of a profound statement is another profound statement that is equally true. For example, Brother David Steindl-Rast says that being grateful for the gifts of our lives is the opposite of taking them for granted. That’s a profound truth. Could there be an opposite truth hidden just under the surface? Maybe being deeply grateful for those gifts makes us want to ensure that others have them too, so securely that they can take them for granted. All children should be able to take for granted that they will be loved, cared for, taught, sheltered. All people should be able to take for granted good work and a home; they should be free to walk the streets safely with equal rights and protections under the law. All people should be able to take for granted their inherent, God-given dignity—so that no one has to say, “I’m a person too,” “I matter.”
