We are in the season of Lent. These 40 days before the great feast of Easter are a time for us to do some spiritual housecleaning. The Church gives us a pattern to follow for this process. Prayer, fasting and almsgiving are the three steps. Taking extra time for prayer calls us to add some time each day or each week to our usual prayer time; i.e. attending Mass during the week, praying the Rosary with your family or reading the Bible each day. Fasting calls us to “give up” something, but it doesn’t necessarily need to be food. We can fast from gossip, from impatience or any other habit we want to change. The final step is almsgiving. This may mean giving food to the food shelf, giving more in support of your parish or other donations to help others, like using the rice bowl supplied by the parish. What are you doing to prepare your heart for Easter?
