Recently someone said, “It gets harder to forgive as one gets older.” For some of us, our experience is just the opposite. It’s true that the longer we live, our failings and weak spots seem more evident to others and to ourselves, but they can also provide a chance to grow in love and forgiveness. As Sister Brian Spain, one of our wise sisters, said, “Love always comes first.” When that happens, forgiveness will follow. To love, to forgive and to be forgiven is the path to building even difficult relationships. As we get older and love matures, in fact it becomes easier to forgive.
