“Our hearts are restless, O God, until they rest in You.” Advent is an acknowledgement and emphasis of our desire for God and God’s presence with us. While Christmas reminds us that God has already come, there are certainly times in our lives when we do not experience God’s presence and must pray, “Come, Lord Jesus.” In those times, when we are waiting for God to be more obviously present, whether in our personal lives or in national and world events, we are asked to exercise great patience. Patience is not an easy virtue to cultivate in our culture where we may experience road rage, irritation at the length of a supermarket line and intolerance of any type of slow or undesired action. Let’s be counterculture. Let’s patiently take a few moments of silence daily during these Advent days and reflect on the mystery of God-with-us.
