St. Teresa of Calcutta tells us to: “Mark the season of Advent by loving and serving the others with God’s own love and concern.” Advent is traditionally a time of waiting, but Mother Teresa’s words remind us that waiting is the not the same as doing nothing. Advent is a call to ask ourselves whom and what do we await. We are blessed to know that it is the Christ who is coming and to be aware that he is the bringer of the Gospel message of love. Our time of waiting must, therefore, include the acts of love of and kindness in our daily life which are the visible sign that we have taken to heart the teaching of our Savior. Let us strive to make real our understanding that Advent is not a time of inactivity, but a time of service, a time to love our neighbor as ourselves.
