Meditations from Saint Benedict’s Monastery, St. Joseph, Minnesota
To the many symbols of Easter, such as brightly colored eggs, lilies, and flowers, Fr. Ed Hays, in A Pilgrim’s Almanac, adds a suggested new symbol: the turtle! He goes on to say: “The turtle can symbolize that the spiritual journey each of us is making is a slow one, and there are no short cuts. At times we can feel like we are making little headway.” Because of this slowness, some of us may refuse to even start the journey to God or may turn back or quit because it takes too long. The success of our journey to God, “depends not so much on courage or goodness of heart as it does on obedience to the divine will as it unfolds in the circumstances of our lives.” By our daily “turtle-like” efforts we will come to experience a new, resurrected life in God.
