On September 4, 1941, she entered Saint Benedict’s Monastery. She was received into the novitiate June 22, 1943, taking the name Mary Helene; made first monastic profession on July 11, 1944; and perpetual monastic profession on July 11, 1947.
S. Mary Helene earned a B.A. degree in music with a minor in philosophy at the College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn., and also attended the Minneapolis College of Music, the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wis., and the University of Minnesota Extension Division in Minneapolis.
Music was central to S. Mary Helene’s life and her beautiful voice graced many liturgies. She served as a music educator at St. Bernard’s, St. Paul, Minn., and St. Paul’s, Sauk Centre, Minn., teaching school music. At St. Mary’s Cathedral, St. Cloud, for 12 years she taught classroom music, gave voice lessons, and was organist. Moving back to Saint Benedict’s Monastery in 1963, she joined the music faculty of the College of Saint Benedict, teaching voice, and served as staff resident, head resident and commuter staff advisor. During these years, she also became involved with the Elderhostel program.
Following retirement from the College in 1992, S. Mary Helene began a ministry of hospitality at the monastery’s Guest House. She was also a part of the Evin Hall Project Team, co-chaired the Benedictine Values Program and assisted sisters with health care and other needs. For the past ten years, she undertook a special ministry of prayer for the College of Saint Benedict students, faculty and staff. She continued this ministry after moving to Saint Scholastica Convent in 2010.
In addition to her Benedictine community, S. Mary Helene is survived by her sister, Sister Leora (Barbara), and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Brother Bertrand (Robert), FSC, and James.
