Sister Giles (Evelyn Elizabeth) Reller

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2014, at the Sacred Heart Chapel, Saint Benedict’s Monastery, St. Joseph, for Sister Giles Reller who died, age 97, on Sunday, May 4, 2014, at Saint Scholastica Convent, St. Cloud, Minn. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. Friends may call at Saint Scholastica Convent on Friday, May 9, from 1:30 – 6 p.m., or for a Vigil Prayer Service at 7 p.m. at Saint Benedict’s Monastery. Visitation continues at 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral.
S. Giles (Evelyn Elizabeth) Reller was born January 26, 1917, to Anton Reller and Agnes (Beuning) Reller in Melrose, Minn. She entered Saint Benedict’s Monastery on August 12, 1934, made her fist monastic profession on July 11, 1939, and perpetual monastic profession on July 11, 1942.
A graduate of St. Anthony’s grade school in St. Cloud, and Saint Benedict’s High School, S. Giles also received a diploma from St. Paul Diocesan Teacher’s College, a B.A. degree in elementary education from the College of Saint Benedict and an M.A. degree from the University of Minnesota in education curriculum and instruction. A lifelong learner, S. Giles continued her education at several universities in the United States.
Education was the heart of S. Giles’ ministry for many years. She taught and/or was principal at a number of schools in Minnesota, including Greenwald; Melrose; Hastings; Buckman; St. Augustine’s, St. Cloud; St. Joseph Lab School; Sauk Centre and Pierz. She also worked as media coordinator and assistant director at the College of Saint Benedict media center. After retiring from education she became a certified nursing assistant and cared for the elderly and disabled. She also served as receptionist and driver for the Sisters at St. Raphael’s Convent, St. Cloud, and was computer assistant for the Hill Museum and Manuscript Library at St. John’s University.
S. Giles is survived by her Benedictine community, three brothers: Robert Ballmann, Waite Park; Gerald Reller, St. Paul; Anthony Reller, Columbia, S.C., and two sisters: Kathleen Hall and Carol Ann Helmin both of Foley, Minn., and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Herbert Reller, and sisters, Magdalen Gott, Bertha Peters, Theresa Schulte, Hildegard Doble, Mary Ann Franzen, Dolores Gangl and Rita Feuker.
