The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2014, at the Sacred Heart Chapel, Saint Benedict’s Monastery, St. Joseph, for Sister Mary (Sebastine) Schneider, who died, age 93,  on Monday, April 21, 2014, at Saint Scholastica Convent, St. Cloud, Minn. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. Friends may call at Saint Scholastica Convent on Wednesday, April 23, from 1-6 p.m., or for a Vigil Prayer Service at 7 p.m. at Saint Benedict’s Monastery. Visitation continues at 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral.

Born February 27, 1921, to George and Mary (Strecker) Schneider in St. Paul, Minn., S. Mary attended St. Bernard’s grade school and St. Joseph Academy in St. Paul, Minn. She received a B.S. degree in business education and a minor in philosophy from the College of Saint Benedict. She also studied accounting at the University of Minnesota and received a diploma in medical records library science from the College of St. Scholastica, Duluth, Minn.

On September 15, 1944, S. Mary entered Saint Benedict’s Monastery; was received into the novitiate on June 21, 1945; made first monastic profession July 11, 1946; and perpetual monastic profession July 11, 1949.

S. Mary’s expertise in medical records formed the basis of her ministry for many years. She served as medical record librarian at St. Benedict’s Hospital in Ogden, Utah, and at St. Cloud Hospital from 1951-1980 as medical record administrator. In 1980, S. Mary moved to Saint Benedict’s Monastery where she served as community secretary and held a number of positions which required secretarial skills, including writing memorial cards for deceased sisters and managing memorabilia for the community.

S. Mary is survived by her Benedictine community, one brother, Robert, a sister, Margaret Schoen, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Jerome and Joseph.
