Mary Ellen was born on May 20, 1930, to John and Harriet (Meurer) Machtemes in Mankato, Minn. After attending St. Boniface Grade School in St. Bonifacius, Minn., and Saint Benedict’s High School in St. Joseph, Minn., she entered Saint Benedict’s Monastery on August 20, 1944. She was received into the novitiate on June 16, 1948, as Sister Mercy, made first monastic profession on July 11, 1949, and perpetual profession on July 11, 1952. In 1968, she returned to her baptismal name, Mary Ellen.

After three years of teaching second graders in Albany, Minn., S. Mary Ellen set out on a long career in health care. She graduated from St. Benedict’s Hospital School of Nursing in Ogden, Utah, and was licensed as a registered nurse. An MSN in nursing was awarded her at Boston College in Boston, Mass., in 1963.

In active health ministry for 48 years, S. Mary Ellen served as operating room supervisor  as well as director of surgery and anesthesia services at St. Benedict’s Hospital in Ogden, Utah, and St. Cloud Hospital. In both places, she was also a nursing supervisor. Then followed a fruitful seven years as director of mission effectiveness at the St. Cloud

Hospital and Saint Benedict Senior Community, St. Cloud.

Managing the Whitby Gift Shop at Saint Benedict’s Monastery for five years was her next step. In 2005 she went to Saint Scholastica Convent to be involved in the Sisters’ ministry of prayer and community living.

S. Mary Ellen is survived by her Benedictine community, her brother Joseph, two sisters (Margaret Mae Hoben and Sister Ann, also of Saint Benedict’s Monastery), and nieces and nephews. Her parents and her brother John preceded her in death.

Please direct memorial gifts to the care of the elderly Sisters of Saint Benedict’s Monastery. Thank you.
