S. Malachy (Grace Marie) Hurley was born on May 23, 1925, to Robert and Mary (Clancey) Hurley in St. Croix Falls, Wis. After finishing public grade and high school there, she entered Saint Benedict’s Monastery on September 2, 1943, was received into the novitiate on June 21, 1944; her first monastic profession was on July 11, 1945, and perpetual profession on July 11, 1948.  Her golden jubilee celebration in 1995 and her 60th anniversary in 2005 were happy occasions.

A bachelor’s degree in elementary education conferred by the College of Saint Benedict prepared S. Malachy for a lifelong teaching ministry. She pursued further studies at Saint John’s University and Seattle University.

For 35 years S. Malachy taught elementary grade school students at St. Mary’s Cathedral and St. Anthony’s in St. Cloud, as well as schools in Elrosa, Maple Lake and Freeport.  After her years of teaching, she worked in the secretarial office at Saint Benedict’s Monastery, then joined the dietary staff at Saint Scholastica Convent for a time, but returned to Saint Benedict’s Monastery for 12 more years in the secretarial office. In 2004 she moved to Saint Scholastica Convent where she helped in community services and was actively involved in the special ministry of prayer. She was also an avid Twins fan and could always be depended on for the scores.

S. Malachy is survived by her Benedictine community, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers (John, Philip, Patrick and twin brothers who died at birth) and three sisters (Georgianna Lock, Adeline Percussa and Alice Hurley).

Please direct memorial gifts to Saint Benedict’s Monastery for the care of our elderly Sisters.
