Daily Meditation for January 4, 2010

by Eunice Antony, OSB

By now, most Christmas gifts have been eaten, worn, already broken, or maybe packed away. Mostly we think of the gift-giving time as over. But wait … if you are hearing this message, you are experiencing the gift of a lifetime, the gift of Time itself. Time is the measurable period during which an action, process or condition exists or continues. Time is God’s gift: the gift of a new year, a chance to grow into the person we most want to be. The four library bells at the College of Saint Benedict have the names of Lectio, Meditatio, Oratio and Contemplatio Latin words for holy reading, meditation, prayer and contemplation. The chiming of these bells at each quarter hour is an invitation to pause, to listen, to be mindful of God’s gracious gift of time. What reminds you to be grateful for the gift of time?
