Daily Meditation for January 1, 2010

Did you know that the first person to pass through Ellis Island was Annie Moore, a 15-year old girl from Cork, Ireland? On New Year’s Day in 1892, she and her two brothers came to America to join their parents who had come to New York two years earlier. Ellis Island also marked a new beginning for many of our relatives. In fact, according to Wikipedia, more than 100 million Americans can trace their ancestry to the immigrants who first arrived in America through Ellis Island before spreading out to places all over the United States. Today, for many of us, just as it was for Annie Moore 117 years ago, New Year’s Day offers an opportunity for us to begin life anew. Lucky for us, we are among the many blessed to be born in America, enjoying the good it has to offer year after year.
