Daily Meditation for December 29, 2009

Christmas is the joyous feast of Jesus’ birth. God becomes one of us! Then, in the days following, the church celebrates the martyrdom of Stephen and the slaughter of the Holy Innocents. What a contrast. Jesus came into the world to teach us the power of God’s love. Yet, as in the days of Herod, power continues to be misused. There are children who are neglected and abused; babies who are aborted; pregnant women who cannot obtain prenatal care; homeless people seeking shelter and food; the innocent who die by violence in war. Where is the joy and hope of Christmas? It is in Jesus, who remains with us and uses our hands and hearts to bring compassion and love to others through our prayer, service and
