Daily Meditation for November 27, 2009

by Julianne Gilbert, OSB

On the sidewalk lay a sparrow that had flown into a window and died. While saying a prayer of gratitude to God for creating so many birds for us to enjoy, Jane set the bird under a bush and thought about the reading in Matthew, chapter 10, which says not even one sparrow falls to the ground without God’s knowledge. Just imagine that our powerful Creator, who made everything in this vast universe, from sparrows to oceans to galaxies, loves each individual part of creation enough to know when it lives and dies. Perhaps, on this day after Thanksgiving, when we are especially aware of all our blessings, God is also thankful that we exist, and finds great pleasure in our presence. If God were saying a prayer of thanksgiving for you, what would that prayer include?
