The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4 p.m. on Thursday, September 27, 2007, at the Sacred Heart Chapel, Saint Benedict’s Monastery, St. Joseph, for Sister Kristin Malloy, 85, who died on September 20, 2007, at Saint Scholastica Convent in St. Cloud. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. Friends may call at Saint Scholastica Convent on Wednesday, September 26, from 1-6 p.m., or for a Prayer Vigil at 7 p.m. at Saint Benedict’s Monastery. Visitation continues at 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral, 4 p.m., on Thursday, September 27.

S. Kristin (Lois) Malloy was born on February 4, 1922, to William and Helen (Lehner) Malloy in Van Hook, N.D.   She attended Van Hook Grade School in Van Hook and Bismarck High School, Bismarck, N.D.  She entered Saint Benedict’s Monastery on September 12, 1945, was received into the novitiate on June 19, 1946, made her first monastic profession on July 11, 1947, and her perpetual profession on July 11, 1950. 

After graduating from the College of Saint Benedict with a B.A. degree in English, S. Kristin worked in Washington, D.C., for two years before entering Saint Benedict’s Monastery. She earned an M.A. degree in English from St. Louis University, St. Louis, Mo., and a Ph.D. in English literature from the University of Minnesota. Other sites of study were St. Thomas University, St. Paul, Minn.; University of Maryland, College Park, Md.; The Catholic University of America and the Graduate School of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, both in Washington, D.C.; and Oxford University in Honeywell, England. 

After one year in the English Department at the College of Saint Benedict, S. Kristin taught English at Cathedral High School, St. Cloud, Minn., and Pierz Memorial High School, Pierz, Minn., where she also served as assistant principal. Returning to the college, she taught English and also worked in the Development Office from 1968-1998. She was an expert in teaching Irish Studies and guided a number of student and adult groups on trips to Ireland. After retiring from the College of Saint Benedict, S. Kristin was involved in writing, editing and calligraphy.

S. Kristin moved to Saint Scholastica in 2000 to continue her life of prayer and community living. She is survived by her Benedictine community and nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were two brothers, William and Justin, and her sister, Helen Yourshaw.
