Sister André (Clara) Marthaler was born on December 12, 1916, to Albert and Antoinette (Deters) Marthaler in West Union, Minn. She was received into the novitiate in 1941 and made her monastic profession on July 11, 1942.

    S. André taught at Cathedral High School; St. Boniface High School; the College of Saint Benedict; St. Cloud Hospital School of Nursing and Bemidji State University. Her skill in teaching English was recognized by the diocese and Central Minnesota Education, Research and Development Council, for whom she was master teacher and linguistics curriculum consultant. Upon retirement from teaching at Bemidji State University in 1985, she received the Distinguished Teacher Award.

At Saint Benedict’s Monastery S. André served as public information coordinator and initiated  Benedictine Sisters and Friends magazine. She authored Two Pews Behind the Driver, a charming retelling of Greyhound bus stories recorded on CD. With her sister, Joan Pfannenstein, she wrote the history of West Union, her home parish.

    S. André was president of the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce from 1985-1987 and later executive secretary and treasurer. She was secretary for St. Joseph Food Shelf and active in Dollars for Scholars. She was president of the board for the Catholic Charities apartments in St. Joseph and Sauk Centre. She was public relations and publicity chair for the Zonta Club and the development committee for New Beginnings in St. Cloud and tour guide at Stearns County History Museum. The 1994 Kelly Award was given her for outstanding leadership and commitment to the community. The St. Cloud Eta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma selected her for the 1995 Woman of Achievement Award. S. André enjoyed sharing her many talents by being involved. Her zest for life overflowed with love for God and people.

In addition to her Benedictine community, S. André is survived by a brother, Reverend Andrew Marthaler of Sauk Centre; sisters Mary Peter, OSC, Sauk Rapids; Germana, OSB, Crookston; Joan (Charles) Pfannenstein, St. Louis Park; Imelda (Jack) McCann, Clear Lake; sisters-in-law Bernice, Wadena; Loraine, Osakis; brother in-law John Hougnon, Plymouth; and many nieces and nephews.
