The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 20, 2010, at Sacred Heart Chapel, Saint Benedict’s Monastery, St. Joseph, for Sister Janice (Lillian) Wedl, who died on March 16 at Saint Scholastica Convent. S. Janice (Lillian), the oldest of John and Mary (Lill) Wedl’s six children, was born on January 31, 1929, in Cold Spring, Minn. She entered Saint Benedict’s Monastery on September 12, 1946, made her first monastic profession on July 11, 1948, and perpetual profession on July 11, 1951. She celebrated her golden jubilee in 1998 and her sixtieth anniversary in 2008.

Her early education was at St. Boniface Grade and High School, Cold Spring. She earned certificates in education from the Diocesan Teachers College in St. Paul, in counseling from Charles Curran Counseling Learning Institute in Sinsinawa, Wis., and in religious studies from Gonzaga University, Spokane, Wash. She also received a BA in elementary education from the College of Saint Benedict and an MA Ed in administration and supervision from Marquette University. She pursued additional studies at St. Cloud State University, University of Dayton, University of Maryland and Saint John’s University School of Theology.

    S. Janice served as teacher, administrator and pastoral minister. From her first ministry as a record librarian at the St. Cloud Hospital, she moved into education, as principal and upper grade teacher at St. Mary’s Cathedral Grade School, St. Cloud, for 16 years; then as principal at St. Joseph Lab School, St. Joseph, for four years. Commuting to Sauk Centre from 1972–1980, she was teacher, counselor and pastoral minister at the Minnesota Home School. Ministry continued at Saint Scholastica Convent as coordinator of community living for nine years. Upon completion of the Credo program at Gonzaga University, she served as the director of pastoral services at St. Francis Xavier Parish in Missoula, Mont., and was an organizer of Montana Coalition for Nursing Home Reform.

In 1993, S. Janice returned to Saint Benedict’s Monastery to be hostess in Studium, to write parish histories and direct the Benedictine Friends program. She moved to Saint Scholastica Convent in 2008, where she served as activities coordinator.

    S. Janice is survived by her Benedictine community; one brother Robert, Bloomington, Minn.; three sisters: Sister Lois, OSB; Eileen (Edward) Marcure, Missoula, Mont.; Mary Alice (George) Keenan, Richmond, Minn.; and brother in-law Arnold Olmsheid. One sister, Joan Olmsheid, preceded her in death. Please direct memorial gifts to the Vocation Fund at Saint Benedict’s Monastery.
