    St. Joseph, Minn.
    December 5, 1913 – January 30, 2010

    The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 3, at Sacred Heart Chapel, Saint Benedict’s Monastery, St. Joseph, for Sister Laura Gaebel, who died on Saturday, January 30, at Saint Scholastica Convent, St. Cloud. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. Friends may call at Saint Scholastica Convent on Tuesday, February 2, from 1-6 p.m., or for a Prayer Vigil at 7 p.m. at Saint Benedict’s Monastery. Visitation continues at 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral on Wednesday, February 3, 3:30 p.m.

    S. Laura, the second of Joseph and Mary (Schulte) Goebel’s nine children, was born on December 5, 1913, in New Munich, Minn. She entered Saint Benedict’s Monastery in 1935, made her monastic profession on July 11, 1937, and her perpetual profession on July 11, 1940. She celebrated her golden jubilee in 1987 and 60th anniversary in 1997.

    After attending Sacred Heart School in New Munich, S. Laura was employed at Saint Benedict’s Monastery before joining as a member, working in the college dining rooms and kitchen. She practiced the domestic arts for over 20 years at Little Flower Mission in Onamia, Minn; Visitation Convent in Tacoma, Wash.; St. Joseph’s Home and Holy Angels Convent in St. Cloud; and at Mount Benedict Monastery in Ogden, Utah. For 16 years she was the executive housekeeper at Queen of Peace Hospital in New Prague, Minn. She then moved on to serve at Saint Raphael’s Convent in St. Cloud for 22 years, as a health care aide, dining room aide and supervisor. She retired to Saint Scholastica Convent in 2001.
    S. Laura is survived by her Benedictine community, her sister (Cordis Gaebel, OSB) and two brothers (Cyril, Freeport; Ewald, Shoreview) Three brothers (Ambrose, Edwin and Raymond) and two sisters (Rosalin Kremer and Edwina), and a foster sister (Marie Bruestle) preceded her in death.
