Sister Madelon (Madeline) Roberge, OSB, 100
    St. Joseph, Minn.
    September 16, 1909–January 16, 2010

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 20, 2010, in Sacred Heart Chapel, Saint Benedict’s Monastery, St. Joseph, for Sister Madelon Roberge, who died on January 16, 2010, at Saint Scholastica Convent, St. Cloud. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. Friends may call at Saint Scholastica Convent on Tuesday, January 19, from 1–6 p.m. or for a Prayer Vigil at 7 p.m. at Saint Benedict’s Monastery. Visitation continues at 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 20, 2010.

    S.  Madelon (Madeline), the second of Felix and Anna (Penzkover) Roberge’s four children, was born on September 16, 1909, in Augusta, Wis. She entered Saint Benedict’s Monastery in 1927, made her monastic profession on July 11, 1930, and her perpetual profession on July 11, 1933. The celebration of her golden jubilee was in 1980, her 75th anniversary in 2005.

    S. Madelon attended St. Patrick’s Grade and High School and graduated from Eau Claire High School in Wisconsin. She attended the College of Saint Benedict and St. Paul Diocesan Teacher’s College and received a certificate in Nursing Home Administration from St. Cloud Hospital.

Elementary education was S. Madelon’s ministry from 1930–1937: teaching middle grades in Waite Park and in Breckenridge. During her 14 years at Cathedral High School,  St. Cloud, she served as registrar, secretary for school superintendent, Monsignor T. Leo Keaveny, and taught religion. At Saint Benedict’s she operated the multi-graph and offset machines for the printing press at the convent, college, high school and card shop; she managed the college book store and taught high school religion.

Through radio broadcasts, she promoted the Fatima Club and distributed pamphlets. She was secretary for the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart in St. Cloud Diocese homes. She served in the business office at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany (and was administrator), at St. Raphael’s Home in St. Cloud and at Saint Benedict’s Monastery.

Moving to Saint Scholastica Convent in 1978, she served as a Sister Visitor at Saint Benedict’s Senior Community until 1994.

Sister Madelon is survived by the Sisters of her Benedictine community and two nephews. A brother (Kenneth) and two sisters (Irene Roberge and Marion LaVelle) preceded her in death.

Please direct memorial gifts to the Vocation Fund at Saint Benedict’s Monastery.
