Many people come to our Web site looking for information about Sisters who were their relatives, teachers or otherwise played a significant role in their lives.

Below you will find obituaries for Sisters who have died recently, in alphabetical order by first name. A comment section follows where you can leave a personal remembrance of a Sister.

A separate obituary is published in the issue of Benedictine Sisters and Friends magazine that is published after her death, where you might find additional photographs. Click here for the archive of past issues.

    Sister Monique (Edvare) Valville, OSB

    St Joseph

    February 21, 1927 – June 21, 2014

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, 2014, at the Sacred Heart Chapel, Saint Benedict’s Monastery, St. Joseph, for Sister Monique (Edvare) Valville, who died on Saturday, June 21, 2014, at Saint Scholastica Convent, St. Cloud, Minn. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. Friends may call at Saint Scholastica Convent on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, from 1-6 p.m., or for a Vigil Prayer Service at 7 p.m. at Saint Benedict’s Monastery. Visitation continues at 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral.

    S. Monique Valville was the second of six children born to Clement and Anna (Moscoso) Valville in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. She attended Fille de la Sagesse grade school and high school in Port-au-Prince.

A Benedictine monk visiting Haiti awakened S. Monique’s monastic call. She entered Saint Benedict’s Monastery in 1953, was received into the novitiate June 16, 1954, made first monastic profession on July 11, 1955, and perpetual monastic profession on July 11, 1959.

    S. Monique served in housekeeping, including at the College of Saint Benedict, St. Raphael’s Home and St. Joseph’s Home in St. Cloud and in White Earth, Minn. On returning to Saint Benedict’s Monastery, she worked in the vestment department for six years. S. Monique also served in the Bahamas where she was involved in social work and acted as advocate for refugees from Haiti. Following a move to Georgia in 1972, she continued in social work. In 1973 S. Monique enrolled in St. Cloud Beauty School and was subsequently licensed by the State of Minnesota Board of Cosmetology. She served the community for many years thereafter taking care of Sisters’ hair. After retiring as cosmetologist she served in a special ministry of prayer and community living.

    S. Monique is survived by her Benedictine community and two sisters: Celide Durand and Nicole Valville and by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Col. Adrian Valville, and sisters, Renée Levy and Violette Demesmain.

Please direct memorial gifts to the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict Retirement Fund.
