Many people come to our Web site looking for information about Sisters who were their relatives, teachers or otherwise played a significant role in their lives.

Below you will find obituaries for Sisters who have died recently, in alphabetical order by first name. A comment section follows where you can leave a personal remembrance of a Sister.

A separate obituary is published in the issue of Benedictine Sisters and Friends magazine that is published after her death, where you might find additional photographs. Click here for the archive of past issues.

    June 17, 1930-January 12, 2012

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, January 16, 2012, at the Sacred Heart Chapel, Saint Benedict’s Monastery, St. Joseph, Minn., for Sister Mary Ann (Maurus) Henn who died on Thursday, January 12, 2012, at Saint Benedict’s Senior Community, St. Cloud.  Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. Friends may call at Saint Scholastica Convent on Sunday, January 15, from 1 to 3 p.m., or for a Prayer Vigil at 4 p.m., until 8 p.m., at Saint Benedict’s Monastery. Visitation continues on Monday, January 16, at 9 a.m. until the time of the 3:30 p.m. funeral.

Mary Ann was the oldest of six children born to George B. and Ella (Rudolph) Henn in Frazee, Minn. After finishing public grade and high school in Frazee, she came to Saint Benedict’s Monastery on September 18, 1950. On entering the novitiate on June 20, 1951, she became known as Sister Maurus, but returned to her baptismal name, Mary Ann, in 1968. Celebrations in her monastic life included her first monastic profession on October 11, 1952, perpetual monastic profession on July 11, 1956, and her golden jubilee in 2002. After attendance at the St. Cloud Hospital School of Nursing from 1948-1950, S. Mary Ann resigned to enter Saint Benedict’s Monastery, but reentered the School on October 19, 1952. Soon after, however, her ministry changed to education. She received a B.A. in elementary education from the College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn. Further sites for study included Saint John’s University, Collegeville, Minn.; St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud; Catholic University, Ponce, Puerto Rico; Mundelein College, Chicago (for Spanish); Universidad Iberoamericana , Mexico City, Mexico; Chicago Teachers’ College, North Chicago (receiving a linguistic grant). In her elementary education ministry, middle and upper grades, S. Mary Ann served at Richmond, St. Augustine’s and St. Anthony’s in St. Cloud, and Luxemburg. She taught Spanish at Saint Benedict’s High School, St. Joseph, and at Cathedral High School, St. Cloud.

At the College of Saint Benedict, she assisted in the library, the alumnae office and cafeteria. At the monastery, she filled the role of receptionist, managed Aunt Laura’s Clothing Shop for 23 years and helped distribute mail in the post office. She enjoyed crafts, especially knitting, and was well known for her extensive poetry. S. Mary Ann moved to Saint Scholastica Convent, St. Cloud, in July 2007.

    S. Mary Ann is survived by her Benedictine community, brothers John (Fountain Hills, Ariz.) and James (Frazee, Minn.), sisters Georgia Gallagher (Eugene, OR) and Rose Mary Tasto (Detroit Lakes, Minn.), as well as nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Roberta Young. Please direct memorial gifts to the care of the elderly Sisters at Saint Benedict’s Monastery.
