Jim Wallis, in his new book, names racism as America’s Original Sin. Startling thought, isn’t it? And worth pondering. Pulitzer prize winner, Isabel Wilkeson offers a different metaphor : Our world is a many leveled house that is always in need of renovation. Ironically, she says, we live in the basement and have not yet begun to renovate that place where we spend our daily lives. She asks such searing questions as, “Why do we continue to kill one another? What is it doing to us? Why do we not open our basement existence and admit that we have lived with slavery for 12 generations? Laws have changed, governments have changed, yet our hearts are the last frontier to change. Knowing our history and feeling the pain of the African American slaves may lead to our being healed and forgiven.
