The Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict of St. Joseph, Minnesota, are shocked and saddened by the events which took place in Charlottesville, Virginia, this past weekend (August 12, 2017). As followers of Jesus Christ, we believe that all people are created equal and that God loves each one individually. Racially-motivated acts of violence are contrary to the Gospel, to Catholic social teaching, and to the Rule of St. Benedict. Our prayers are with the people and families who suffered from such violence in Charlottesville. We pray especially for Heather Heyer, who was killed, and for those who grieve for her. As Christians, we pray, too, for the white supremacist and Nazi groups, that their hearts may be converted and that they come to understand the depth and breadth of Christ’s commandment to love our neighbor without reservation, whoever that may be.
