Sister Marie (Cuthbert) Zwilling Died on Wednesday, November 5, 2008

S. Marie was born May 6, 1906, to Nick and Clara (Fruth) Zwilling in Collegeville, Minn. She attended grade school in rural Collegeville and Saint Benedict’s High School in St. Joseph. She entered Saint Benedict’s Monastery on August 24, 1923. On June 18, 1925, she was received into the novitiate as Sister Cuthbert. Her first monastic profession was on July 11, 1926, and perpetual profession on July 11, 1929. In 1968 she resumed the use of her baptismal name Marie.

At the College of Saint Benedict, S. Marie earned a degree in elementary education. She went on to further studies at Moorhead State College, St. Cloud State University, Diocesan Teachers’ College and the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minn. For many years she ministered as principal and/or teacher in Wadena; Waite Park; Holy Angels and St. Peter’s in St. Cloud; Albany; and at St. Joseph’s and St. Mary’s Basilica in Minneapolis. She also served as librarian at the College of Saint Benedict and at Saint Benedict’s Monastery. She moved to Saint Scholastica Convent on November 5, 2002.

S. Marie is survived by her Benedictine community and two sisters (Therese Lambert and Helen Middendorf). She was preceded in death by five brothers (Math, John, Aloys, Joseph and Celestine) and three sisters: (Frances Steichen, Elizabeth [S. Berchmans, OSB] and Margaret Hoeschen).
